읽다([ik-da/read]) is the basic verb for reading books, signs, or documents. In polite speech, say 읽어요([il-geo-yo]).
The final ㄺ is tricky. 읽다 is pronounced [익따] (ik-tta), and 읽지 is pronounced [익찌] (ik-jji). Before a consonant, the ㄹ is silent. Before a vowel, both sounds appear: 읽어요 [일거요] (il-geo-yo).
Use the pattern -(으)ㄹ 수 있어요 (can). Example: 한국어를 읽을 수 있어요 (han-gu-geo-reul il-geul su i-sseo-yo) means "I can read Korean". For "cannot", say 읽을 수 없어요.
